Social Recovery

How social recovery uses guardians to restore a smart contract wallet after key loss, and the collusion and availability risks the design introduces.

Social recovery is a wallet design where a set of trusted guardians, such as friends, family, your own spare devices or an institution, can collectively restore access to your account if you lose your signing key. It works with smart contract wallets: guardians never hold your funds, they only vote to assign a new owner key, usually after a delay window that lets you cancel an unwanted attempt. This removes the failure mode where one lost phrase means everything is gone. The risks shift rather than disappear: guardians can collude, become unreachable, or be socially engineered, so choose independent parties, keep the threshold sensible and confirm periodically that each guardian is still contactable.
