Rebase Token

A token whose contract changes every holder's balance directly. Units move without a transaction, and support across venues and contracts is uneven.

A rebase token adjusts the balance in every holder's wallet according to a rule in its contract, rather than leaving balances fixed until someone transfers. When a rebase happens, the number of units shown goes up or down for everyone proportionally, and each holder's share of the total is unchanged by the adjustment itself. Designs use the mechanism for different reasons — to keep a unit tracking a reference, or to let accrued rewards appear as a growing balance without a claim transaction. The practical consequences are what matter. A balance can change without any transaction the holder made, which makes wallet history confusing and record-keeping for tax purposes harder, and it means a screenshot of a balance is meaningless without its timestamp. Contracts, exchanges and bridges that assume balances only change on transfer can also mishandle these tokens, so support is uneven and worth checking before moving one anywhere.
