Private Key

Wallets & Security

The secret code that proves ownership of a crypto address and authorizes spending — never to be shared with anyone.

A private key is a secret string of letters and numbers that proves ownership of a cryptocurrency address and authorizes spending from it — think of it as a password that unlocks your funds, except it can never be reset if lost. It is mathematically paired with a public key or address that others can safely share with you to send funds. Anyone who obtains your private key can move your coins, which is why it should never be shared, screenshotted, or stored in plain text online. Most wallets generate and manage private keys for you behind a seed phrase, so you rarely see the raw key itself.
